Crimson Pirate's Disaster and Emergency Preparation Favorites

Some people think nothing bad ever happens. Then why do we have a hurricane season? Why does California shake now and then? Ask the midwest about tornados. Shit happens. So you have to decide whether your going to go to the nearest shelter, you know, like the super dome during Katrina, wasn't that a lovely place to be, or whether your going to handle things yourself. If you decide the former close this page, it's a waste of your time. If you decide the latter then read on. By the way, do you have a daughter? A wife? They would have been appreciated at the dome. I know, I'm evil, but hey, I'm honest.

Here are some of my favorite publications regarding emergency preparedness. Most are FEMA, Homeland Security, Red Cross, or LDS (Mormons). They offer the best information in the most concise packages. The government advises you to have 2 weeks to 6 months of supplies, depending on which agency it is and where you are. The Mormons advise 2 years. Given the aftermath of Katrina, and other recent disasters do you really want to go to a shelter, or depend on others for your needs?

One thing conspicuously absent from all of these documents is a discussion of weapons. It is absolutely essential that you have a firearm in a common caliber, and ammunition for it. It is equally essential that you go and practice with it. Learn to take care of it, load, and unload it, clean it, and hit the broadside of a barn with it. When you need it, it will be too late to get one. It will be too late to learn. Do you have car insurance? Why, do you get in a lot of accidents? Then why do you need car insurance? That's exactly why you need a gun. The typical recommended battery is a handgun, a rifle (military style if possible), and a shotgun, acquired in that order. The most important is the handgun.
