Maurmidion and Eolyn were best friends from their youth, though where that was is unknown. It is known that Maurmidion and Eolyn were in Thingols realm in Doriath in Beleriand during the first age, but their actual place of origin is a mystery. Neither was inclined to speak of it. They shared command of the resistance against Sauronic forces in northern Eriador in the second age prior to the arrival of the Last Alliance. They opposed Draven Stonetoe, Saurons Northern general. They have no great love for the Noldor, but seemed determined to help the Faithful edain. The first lord of this area in the line of Baerendur was one of their generals during the second age. In the end Maurmidion and Eolyn defeated Draven, and used his ring in great building projects in the area, including Caras Marad. Draven, like all enslaved fully by a ring of power, could not be slain while his ring existed. However Ost-in Edhil, where the ring was forged, had been destroyed. Evil creatures, the remains of Saurons defeated forces, roamed the wild. Unable to destroy Draven, they imprisoned him in a deep stone tomb, and used their power to keep him at bay. Bereft of his ring, he was easily controlled for them. In time Maurmidion was seduced by the ring, and came to covet it, eventually betraying his best friend. He was defeated by Eolyn who took his eyes as punishment, embedding them in an amber obelisk forever watching the tomb of Draven. In this way the two rivals for the dwarven ring of power, Draven and Maurmidion, kept each other subdued. Eolyn was able to continue the healing of the land without interference. When he felt his task complete, Eolyn then hid the ring in the foundations of Caras Marad where it has remained ever since. Eolyn retired to Imladris, and spent the rest of his days with his wife and children. Maurmidion wandered the area as a blind and bereft beggar, forever seeking the hiding place of his most precious possession ........................

The lore of Eolyn, Maurmidion, and the ring were known only to the highest levels of the resistance in the second age. Even the lords of the Last Alliance were not given all of the details. Although much of the information remained in the books, and scrolls kept in the Council Building in Caras Marad, few if any studied so deeply. Dealing with the common problems surrounding the end of the second age, and most of the third age, the lore was forgotten, even by the line of Baerendur. With the usual threat of orcs, trolls, wolves, bandits, cold winters, and eventually plague the population of the area is in a constant state of flux. Within a decade the population was all new, with only the line of Baerendur remaining. By the later days of the third age a cycle of population change each decade had set in. This resulted in the average stay in the region being less than ten years, with those born here moving away before the age of twenty five, and new settlers moving in from the south, west, or east. Thus Caras Marad kept its secrets. Maurmidion wandered the land, and The Valley of Green Eyes remained undisturbed.
